Redesigned Google Sites Commenting

Guess what? You can now see the faces of those who are commenting on your Google Site. But let's be honest, how many of you are actually using the comments system in Google Sites? I haven't stressed this feature to my clients but perhaps now I'm a bit more proud of the commenting system at the footer of Google Sites pages.



What's new?
You get portraits, a better looking design, and notification settings.

Tip: If you don't want the comments feature at the bottom of a specific page, go to More > Page Settings > Disable Comments.



Conclusion
This is a small feature upgrade, but perhaps it will allude to the much more demanded public commenting system people have been clamoring for. I mean, add public comments to your announcements so that it acts more like a blog. It's been difficult to integrate Disqus to Google Sites (can be done but looks pretty clunky). In the meantime, this is nice for those who are already using the editor/owner comments for improving their intranet. It's like leaving sticky notes for people to improve pages I think.

    Most of the improvement in google sites are worthless and doesn't give anything to most users. Why they make surveys for? I don't even bother to fill them out

      I agree with the above comment. They should bring more and more improvements in design part like wix.com and blogger etc.

    With this redesign comments disappeared from Recent Site Activity. It was a key feature of our intranet and now it's gone!

      I agree with this --- on our company intranet, comments often have as much information as the original post. If everyone has to set their own individual notification settings for each individual post, no one is ever going to see the comments consistently.

RSS Feed for Google Sites!

A Reliable Gadget for Embedding your Feeds I was struggling just weeks ago trying to create a RSS feed that looked decent and accomplished what should be a simple task. This minor update caught me by surprise and I am happy to see it. I was using FeedWind to accomplish a RSS feed through an iframe, that means my html was hosted with a third-party and embedded onto the webpage via Mori79's iframe gadget (search iframe under public gadgets and it is the first one). The Slideshow Option. Not terribly useful, but nice. Anyways, no more iframes, just a customizable, easy to use Google-endorsed gadget. We at Kirksville Web Design have already fully tested out this gadget including the interesting display feature, slideshow. The slideshow only shows the title as a link and a thumbnail. It's not the most useful or aesthetically pleasing, but I'm all for options here. No Transparency Allowed on Hexcode for bg color. Here's the original post below. Enjoy! Better...

New Google Plus Communities Integration

For the first time you can actually embed a Google + environment, stream with posting capability into a website. They have made it super easy to do in the New Google Sites using the Embed URL tool. Before, it seemed that Google was intent on having most Google + content locked down in the platform with no export options. The security around Communities in particular seemed to be an obstacle. Anyways, now things are different. Sites and Google Plus have a new relationship and interaction within intranets is much better because of it.
